One of the conflicts that I often find myself coming across in my writings for the games produced by Voltage Inc. is the choice of whether or not I should attempt a faceless romantic interest or if I should define a personality. With the first choice I provide more freedom to the readers to picture themselves as they please in my writings, and generally avoid going very in depth into their characters. On the other hand, I feel that with a more defined personality I can do more to bring the main character seen in the games into my writings.
My personal preference when I play otome games is to treat the main character as her own person rather than myself. I follow the confessions blog, otomegamerconfessions, and I’ve seen more than my fair confessions from people that struggle to project themselves onto a main character because her personality is so different from their own. As with every scenario though there are two sides, and I have seen people that argue for more games with more defined personalities and back stories to the main characters of the games that they play.
In consideration to my personal preferences and to the fact that there is a market of people that would prefer to see a variety of personalities, I began to reflect upon the female leads of the Voltage Inc. games. Many personal friends of my own believe that these females most commonly lack an actual personality. In some aspects, I agree with them, but on many I do not. I believe that there are subtle hints to the personality of the main characters, but not everything of their person is obvious. To be frank, there is so much to the personality of a person that it is hard to encompass it in even a game the length of 10 Days With The Devil or My Forged Wedding.
With some personal interpretation and liberation, I’ve crafted my own set of personalities for each of the main characters of the Voltage Inc. games. More likely than not my future works might include a larger role of the female characters though I will continue to focus upon the male interests. Mind you, these personalities are built and based off of what I have seen from what routes I have played of each of these games so more likely than not they are headcanons. Part I will include the female leads of 10 Days With The Devil, A Knight’s Devotion, and Be My Princess. If people express enough interest, I will write a Part II consisting of the female leads from Celebrity Darling, In Your Arms Tonight, and Love Letter from Thief X.
